The Minimalist Closet: Capsule Wardrobe

Alright, I'm sure we've all been there. Staring at our closets, throwing on a shirt then throwing it onto a big pile of no's on our beds and sometimes our floors! Well, what if I told you it didn't have to be like that? No big mess. No clutter. Saving money. Upgrade but also downgrade your wardrobe.. All of this can be your reality when you build a Capsule Wardrobe! (You can grab my capsule wardrobe checklist at the end of this post !)

Personally, building a capsule wardrobe has changed my life for the better. (Not to be dramatic anything, but seriously you need one). I used to buy what is trending or for lack of better words, "fast fashion". Don't get me wrong I've picked out some cute pieces over the years, but these cheap pieces don't last in the longterm which ends up costing you more money to replace it. So did you really save money buying off of that sales rack? No. It's okay, I'm here to steer you on the right track.

What is a Capsule Wardrobe?

Typically, a Capsule wardrobe contains 26- 40 items that are of good quality, versatile and timeless. These pieces are also of a certain colour scheme that you choose either based on what you already have or what you would like to own more of. An advantage of having fewer pieces that are interchangeable creates a much simpler way of living. When you go to a closet that only contains items that flatter you, compliment you and make you feel CONFIDENT, you will find it much easier to pick out an outfit and go about your day! In all honesty, I can say that I am finally in love with every piece in my closet.

Ultimately, I believe that building a capsule wardrobe provides us with the time to give thought to the way in which we present ourselves in society. Given the sudden amount of hours this quarantine has given us in life, I encourage us all to think about: our clothing, the clothing we buy and what we wear. All in all, whether you do or don't intend to build your own capsule wardrobe, think about what you want your clothes to say about you and become a more conscientious consumer.

Here is how to build the Capsule Wardrobe of your DREAMS!

1. Set guidelines- Ask yourself:

- Do I like this item?

- Does it fit me nice?

- Is the material comfortable?

- Do I feel CONFIDENT in this item?

- How is the quality?

2. Declutter, Organize- Try everything on:

- Create YES, or NO piles

- Sort clothing into separate colour piles

(TIP: write down on a piece of paper all the articles you own and their colours in a separate categories chart to keep track and use for reference!)

3. Create a style inspiration board- See what you gravitate more towards:

- Assess your preferred colour scheme based on either what you own or what you would want to include

- choose colours that: you find the most flattering, give you confidence, are versatile.

(TIP: 4-5 Neutral colours.. i.e white. black, beige, grey, brown. Pick 1-2 accent colors that you enjoy and also that work with the neutrals.. i.e Red, Green.)

- Either use online boards such as Pinterest or use magazines for inspiration !

- Explore what styles fit your personality and lifestyle

- comfy, casual, proffesional, classic, artsy, vintage.. so many more the list goes on!

5. Shop for what is missing!

- With the knowledge you now have on what you would like out of your clothes and of what is in your closet, purchase the staples you are missing & have fun!
